Omicron deaths in US exceed Delta high as Covid-19 optimism rises in Europe

Several signs emerged that the Omicron wave is taking a less severe human toll in Europe than earlier phases of the pandemic, while US data showed daily average deaths from the disease exceeding the peak reached during the rise driven by the formerly dominant Delta variant.

In the United States, the seven-day average of recently reported Covid-19 deaths reached 2,258 a day on Tuesday, an increase of about 1,000 from the daily death toll two months ago, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. It is the highest since February 2021 as the country was coming out of the worst from last winter’s wave.
