Omicron variant adds urgency to talks over vaccines against Covid-19, says WTO chief

WASHINGTON — The new Omicron Covid-19 variant has increased urgency for the World Trade Organization to act more quickly on vaccines, the group’s leader said on Tuesday, as the variant disrupted controversial negotiations aimed at boosting vaccine delivery to poorer countries around the world.

Omicron’s rise forced the WTO to postpone a major ministerial meeting scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva, which included discussions about vaccinating billions of people in developing countries by suspending intellectual property rights to vaccines.
