Pigeon River Brewing Co. Get creative in tackling COVID-19 challenges

MARION, Wisconsin (WFRV) – COVID-19 has presented challenges for all small businesses. While many had to make the difficult decision to close shop, a small Wisconsin brewery is tackling the pandemic head-on.

“Even more than COVID, the labor shortage is really what hurts us,” said Kayla Knaack, co-owner of Pigeon River Brewing Company in Marion.

Kayla runs the brewery with her husband Nate. Add five children to the home and the pandemic took a heavy toll on their businesses and families. “I worked until 3 or 4 pm and then flip-flop so I could take care of the kids,” explained Nate Knaack.

For the town of Marion, with a population of only about 1,200 people, that just throws a wrench into the talent pool.

The couple told Local 5’s Barrett Tryon that closing their doors was never an option. “We’ve really stepped back and looked at our business in general. Where are we, where do we need to be, and how are we going to get there,” says Nate.

The brewery eventually shortened their menu to make it easier for everyone, especially the kitchen staff.

“It was a good opportunity to bring a little more craft to our menu and offer some different options that are not available in our area,” added Kayla.

Their company, like the recipes, had to adapt to the changing climate of COVID-19.

“What we’ve learned is that it’s really scary to change something that we’ve been used to for the past (almost) 10 years,” says Nate. “But if you can execute things well and plan well, you can make things a great success.”
