Three stimulus payments have been sent to Americans to help them cope with the economic consequences of the pandemic. Posts on social media use a video clip of a White House official falsely claiming a fourth payment is coming soon. But the video is from March 2021 and a fourth payment is not coming.
In response to the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government has issued three payments to eligible individuals. In March 2020 became The Law on Coronavirus Aid and Financial Security given $ 1,200; $ 600 was provided in an emergency measure in December 2020; and $ 1,400 were sent under American rescue plansigned in March 2021 by President Joe Biden.
Still, some high-traffic social media posts use an 11-month-old video of White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki erroneously claims that direct deposits will be made to “eligible Americans” in the coming days.
On January 31, a Facebook account rang Care First Homes, a page apparently aimed at senior citizens shared a post containing one 11-second video of Psaki talking about stimulus checks sent to eligible Americans via direct deposit, along with a video clip of Biden signing a document.
“That was in the news last night. My good friend also called me earlier this morning and told me about the wonderful news for those of us on medication. All I did was enter my zip code to verify my medicare information, and now I’m getting $ 2880. It only took 65 seconds! Please enter zip, “read the caption for the post from Care First Homes, which boasts its”About“page that it provides”[i]crazy techniques to save money for everyone. ”
The post has hundreds of comments, including questionable comments, apparently made to help drive traffic. “I just entered my zip and got confirmation that my $ 2880 is on its way. Thank you, “a commentator said. Most commenters simply entered their zip codes.
The same day, a Facebook page called Homes Points posted the same video with a caption declaring it “wonderful news for drivers.”
“This was announced on the TV channel last night. My close friend also called me this morning and told me about the wonderful news for drivers. All I did was complete the quiz and confirm my driving details and now I get $ 675 Just press learn more and complete the short quiz! “
But cut off Psaki shown in the posts is actually from March 11, 2021, right after Biden signed that American Rescue Plan Act. Posts use the old clip to erroneously claim that direct deposits are being made again this year.
