Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping pledge cooperation at US-China virtual summit

President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke for three and a half hours on Monday at a virtual summit. Topics discussed included Taiwan, human rights and trade policy. At the summit, Xi Biden warned that supporting Taiwanese independence would be “playing with fire”. Xi also criticized the US for building new alliances in the Pacific to counter China’s rise. Xi said dividing the world into blocs “would unavoidably bring disaster to the world”. Biden called on the two nations to develop “guardrails” to prevent potential disagreements from turning into conflict.
