As the number of cases of COVID-19 declines in northern Virginia, the Prince William Health District has closed its permanent test center, hopefully for the last time.
On February 10, the Community Testing Center closed at the Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge. Its test operations will be limited to a shared mobile van that the district plans to bring to another location in the county each Tuesday.
The move to close the venue at the stadium comes as the number of COVID cases drops sharply from their Omicron height in January. The county’s seven-day average for new daily cases has dropped to around 100. In mid-January, the seven-day average was over 1,000. At the same time, the demand for testing has also fallen.
“We only saw anywhere from 20 to 30 people a day for testing. And so the demand for testing dropped quickly after the first bustle of the holiday season,” Amanda David, Emergency coordinator for public health, told InsideNoVa. “To better hit targeted neighborhoods and populations, instead of a constant place, let’s take it out on the road.”
During the peak in January, the test center had between 300 and 400 visitors daily, Davis said. In all, it completed 3,272 tests between opening on 13 January and closing on 10 February.
The new mobile van will be distributed throughout northern Virginia, but will be in Prince William at least every Tuesday. Davis said the health district is also working on adding some Saturday dates.
The health department will promote the placement of the van on its social media accounts and news releases. It is encouraged to book an appointment, but there will be the possibility of walking tests.
Meanwhile, the health district’s vaccination clinics at the former Gander Mountain store in Woodbridge and Manassas Mall remain open. The Gander Mountain Clinic is open every day except Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Manassas Mall Clinic is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00 to 18.00 and Saturdays from kl.
