San Antonio mom shares children’s experiences in Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine trial

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio mom shares her family’s story after her children received the COVID-19 shot in a Moderna vaccine trial in August.

β€œI took the opportunity to potentially have my kids vaccinated around the time school started,” said Melissa Hoelscher, a San Antonio resident.

Hoelscher said her 8-year-old twins and 10-year-old daughter participated in Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine trial called KidCOVE.

“The clinic we went to is actually in Port Lavaca,” Hoelscher said.

Her children received their first injection at the end of August and their second injection four weeks later.

β€œOn the first shot, the girls had large red spots on their arms that were warm to the touch and painful, but no fever. They never felt really sick or even tired at all,” Hoelscher said.

As part of the study, Hoelscher had to monitor her children’s symptoms and fill out health forms every day.

“Before they had breakfast, we took their temperatures and documented that as part of one of the studies we had to do,” Hoelscher said.

Hoelscher said the family found out that her two daughters ended up getting the COVID-19 vaccine in the study and her son didn’t, so they took him to get the Pfizer shot.

“He’s doing great. His arm was a little sore this morning, but he didn’t really have any redness. It didn’t feel warm,” Hoelscher said.

Hoelscher said her children are doing well and has a message for parents considering having their children vaccinated.

‘If you’re not sure, talk to your doctor. But you know, for my kids, I know the side effects were much less than for my husband and my parents when they got the shot,” Hoelscher said.
