ALBANY — A Saratoga Springs man has been sentenced to a year of probation for misusing a Social Security number to get unemployment benefits.
Markhwan Berning, 37, had previously admitted to receiving benefits, including federal pandemic-related benefits, between May and July 2020 by falsely presenting a fake Social Security number as his own to the New York State Department of Labor. press release from the US Attorney’s Office.
Berning must also pay a $2,000 fine and repay $16,383 to the state.
This case was investigated by the Inspector General’s Department of Labor Office, with assistance from the FBI and the State Department of Labor’s Office of Special Investigations. It was prosecuted by US Assistant Attorney Joshua Rosenthal.
