SC issues notice in activists’ application on the issue of food and social security of migrant workers

An RTI was filed with the central government and asked which states asked for additional food grains to give to migrant workers, and the respondent said that only 2 states – Telangana and Meghalaya – had sought additional food grains to give to migrant workers, and even that was not delivered by the central government. government.

Therefore, it is clear that there is a lack of compliance with the instructions.

It is pertinent to note that during the 3rd wave of COVID in January 2022, there were again restrictions – curfews, closures, closures of offices, jobs, markets across the country, affecting livelihoods and lives for marginalized sections of society, especially migrant workers. The application was submitted in January.

The central government has extended Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) to September 2022, where all ration card holders will receive an additional 5 kg of grain per year. person (in addition to the ration right of 5 kg per person).

The official press release regarding the cabinet decision to extend PMGKAY notes, “Although the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed significantly and economic activity is picking up, this PM-GKAY expansion would ensure that no poor households go to bed without food during this time of recovery.”

Therefore, although the government is well aware of the continuing distress; however, it has not introduced any scheme for equally poor and vulnerable families who do not hold ration cards, said a statement issued by activists Harsh Mander, Anjali Bhardwaj and Jagdeep Chhokar.

The petitioners were represented by lawyers Prashant Bhushan and Cheryl D’Souza. The case is now open until 18 May.
