Senior officials in the United States and China meet in Rome

Senior US and Chinese officials have met in Rome while Russia continues its offensive in Ukraine.

Chinese state-run television company CCTV said U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi began talks Monday.

US media reported that it is the first time for senior officials from the two countries to meet in person since the Russian invasion began.

Details of the conversations are not yet available. Sullivan told US television station CNN ahead of the meeting that Washington was watching closely to see how far Beijing provided financial or material support to Russia.

He said China had been directly told that “there will definitely be consequences” for large-scale efforts to evade sanctions or help Russia complete them. He said the United States would not allow it to move forward “from any country, anywhere in the world.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters on Monday that the Ukraine situation would certainly be an important topic at the meeting.
