Signatures on the way to the 3 million | . border

The leading petition on change.org for a $2,000 monthly stimulus check has garnered nearly 3 million signatures and is only 45,000 away from the target. But the federal government has currently suspended all direct stimulus and continues to deal with the infrastructure and social spending bill.

Momentum in online support for the $2,000 stimulus check has waned in recent weeks following the surge in the summer when the Delta variant of the virus struck relentlessly. New cases and pandemic-related deaths are also trending downward.

The online petition on change.org was initiated by Denver restaurateur Stephanie Bonin. She had called on the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to regularly pass legislation of a minimum of $2,000 per month for adults during the disaster period. She has also applied for half of that amount for children.

The number of online signatures now stands at 2,959,600 on Saturday. But there were only 29,000 new supporters last month and only 5,000 this week. When it reaches the 3M mark, it will be change.org’s most signed petition.

The online campaign received a spurt of support this summer with more than 100,000 signatures within a week, even as families continued to struggle to get food on the table and pay utilities and rent. The economic downturn was caused by the pandemic.

Petition from seniors for stimulus control

Even as the Bonin-initiated campaign approaches 3M’s border, another petition for the hard-hit Social Security beneficiaries has garnered 75,000 online signatures. The Senior Citizens League is behind the petition and has asked Congress for a stimulus check for seniors, widows, disabled adults and widowers as they are among the worst affected by the pandemic.

But the federal government is more concerned about the two bills than about any further stimulus. With the infrastructure bill passed, leaders are now focusing on the larger social bill, which is a major agenda for the federal government. But no stimulus check is part of these bills.
