You will need your CPR number for a number of things, but it is not often that you are required to show your physical card. However, this does not mean that you should not keep it updated or delay replacing it if you have lost it – because you still need it if, for example, you start a new job or get a new driver’s license (in some states) .
If you have misplaced your Social Security card, or you have recently changed your name for some reason, you can get a new one. But how you do it depends on whether you need a new one with updated information or just a replacement with no changes.
We explain what you need to get a new social security card for both situations. For more, here.
The Social Security Administration gives you 3 ways to request a new Social Security card
There are several ways to request a new card: in person, online or by mail. If you meet the requirements, it may be the easiest way to do it online, but if you need to request a new card by mail, the administration says you should not send original primary documents that you should keep in your possession, such as your driver’s license, your passport or your immigration documents.
Documents must also be originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them. The administration does not accept photocopies or certified copies.
If you personally receive a new card or send your documents by post, be sure to fill it out as well Form SS-5 (PDF).
What documents do I need to get a new social security card?
No matter how you do it – online, in person at a social security office or by mail – you will need documents to prove your citizenship, age and identity.
Proof of US citizenship: This can be your birth certificate or a US passport. This documentation is only required if you have not already established citizenship with the Social Security Administration.
Proof of age: A birth certificate is best, but if you do not have one, the Social Security Administration can accept a religious record made before you turn 5, a U.S. hospital record of your birth, or a U.S. passport.
Form of identification: This may include your US driver’s license, US passport or state-issued non-driver ID card.
If you do not have any of these documents, the Social Security Administration can accept one of the following:
- Employee ID card
- School ID card
- Health insurance card (but not a Medicare card)
- US military ID card
How to apply for a new social security card without changes
The easiest way is to request a new card online, especially if you do not live near a social security office.
You need to create one My social security account to get started. Once logged in, you should see a link that says Replace your social security card on the top.
Once you have clicked on the link, you will be asked a series of questions to determine if you are eligible to apply for a replacement card online. Finally, you must confirm your identity by answering several other questions, and then electronically sign your name before submitting your request.
Here’s who is not qualified to request a card online:
- People living in Alaska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma or West Virginia.
- Those who request a name change – or any other change – on their card.
- Those with a driver’s license or ID card issued by a U.S. territory, such as U.S. Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
If you want to request a new card in person, this is where you can find a local office to schedule an appointment. And if you’d rather send your query, here’s how to do it find the postal address of your nearest office.
You have to fill out and submit this formwhether you are visiting an office in person or submitting your request.
How to get a replacement card if you have changed your name or other information

You can either take the necessary documents to a nearby social security office or send them by post. You can not request a new change card online.
As with requesting a new card without modifications, you must show proof of U.S. citizenship, proof of your legal name change, and some form of identification.
When you get your new card, it will have your same CPR number with your new name.

That The Social Security Administration says It will take about seven to 10 business days to receive your new Social Security card if you applied online or in person.
