Social Security: Understanding the Benefits of Spouses | Business news

Did you know that your spouse’s benefit can be up to 50 percent of your spouse’s full retirement age?

If you qualify for a pension benefit on the basis of your own employment history and the details of your partner, we always pay your own benefit first. If the amount that you can receive in your spouse’s file is higher, we will pay you that extra amount: the difference between the partner’s allowance and your own. You cannot receive partner benefits unless your spouse receives their retirement benefits (except for divorced spouses).

If you receive your retirement benefit before full retirement age, while you wait for your spouse to reach full retirement age, your own portion of the pension will be reduced. When you add up your spouse’s benefits later, the total pension and spouse’s benefits combined do not exceed 50 percent of the employee’s amount. Knowing these benefits will help you plan your financial future. Access a wealth of helpful information on our retirement portal at www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement.
