Solium Infernum is a grand strategy game for PC set in hell
September 23, 2022
I know a lot of people who would say a great strategy game set everywhere would be hell, but those people don’t know what they’re missing.
Solium Infernum was announced overnight, and it’s the next game from League of Geeks, the team behind the long-running and very good Armello. The official description reads:
Get ready for Solium Infernum, the grand strategy game of politics, intrigue and betrayal, set in the ultimate arena of hell.
As a mighty fallen nemesis, sinister rulers of the infernal kingdom of hell, you are a contender for the infernal throne – the great dark majesty is missing and the feverish conclave demands a replacement. Command feared legions, enlist champion praetors, perform sinister rituals, and defeat your rivals to become the new Dark Majesty of Hell.
A “Grand Strategy Game” is something like: Crusader Kingsa title that asks the player to do all kinds of different things at the head of a faction, from managing the economy to moving armies to deal with political intrigue. So imagine that, only here you compete to be the new one Great Dark Majesty.
Now for real fun part: this is not a brand new game! It is instead an attempt to do justice to one of the most interesting, albeit underrated strategy games of the past 15 years. Designer Vic Davis aka Cryptic Comet Released Solium Infernum in 2009 (the site is still live and you can even download a demo for it), and it looked like this:

Armellos meanwhile, looks like this:
If you see similarities between the screenshot above and Armello, that’s no coincidence. League of Geeks boss Trent Kusters told GI.biz That “[Solium Infernum] was a huge source of inspiration for Armello. So it’s quite an honor. We have Vic . known [Davis] for years. And when we were [thinking] ‘What are we going to do for our next game?’ Ty Carey – my co-founder – was like, ‘let’s do this, let’s talk to him.’”
Davis—who apparently doesn’t design games anymore and now sells donuts which sounds great-eventually to rent out League of Geeks “obtain” the IP and in doing so “passed” the torch” to the Australian studio, which hopes Infernum’s core experience (which led to this brilliant series of Rock Paper Shotgun back in the days) can find a wider, more appreciative audience after it’s reworked and got a new coat of paint.
The game will be out on Steam sometime in 2023 and you can watch the cinematic trailer below:
