California will lift its mandate for indoor maskfor vaccinated persons, in a few days.

While San Diego County Health Department figures show an overall decline in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, some neighborhoods have significantly higher cases than others.

Looking at the latest figuresseveral South Bay neighborhoods have the highest case rates in the entire country.

“To be honest, I was not really aware that we had such a large number of cases in South Bay,” said Timothy Parker, owner of Chula Vista Brewery.

Parker shared with NBC 7 that despite the recent rise, business has been good in his bar. While some customers are cautious when it comes to COVID protocols, he says many people in the neighborhood have changed their perspective on the pandemic.

“I think we are at the point where we are just learning to live with it,” he said, adding that many customers do not care to wear masks anymore.

Evelyn Salazar is the owner of Standlee’s in Chula Vista, a few doors down. She hopes that the number of cases of COVID in the area will soon decrease. As the owner of a bakery, she explains that her business depends on social gatherings.

“Hopefully people will start celebrating. Parties, birthdays … to meet again,” she said.

Although the mask mandate has not bothered her personally, it has at times made it difficult with customers.

“It hasn’t been a big nuisance, but we get those customers who refuse to carry it,” she said.

Salazar says the end of the mandate represents hope for her business and for many a return to normalcy.
