CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — About 20 nurses and doctors at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel went on strike Friday after saying they had been denied religious waivers for the COVID-19 vaccine.
“I don’t feel like I have to explain my beliefs,” said Beth Cook, a nurse at the hospital.
Cook told I-Team 8 that she found the questions too personal when applying for a religious exemption. She says that while she cares about her patients, she doesn’t want to endanger her family or her faith.
Cook says the staff have already submitted their two-week notice. She thinks more could come if things don’t change.
I-Team 8 found that staff shortages have a direct impact on patients. One surgical patient, who did not want to be identified, says their surgery had to be canceled for the year due to staff shortages.
