CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) — Mecklenburg County says only 33% of those eligible for a COVID-19 booster shot received it.
To help increase that percentage, StarMed gets creative. It partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank in Metrolina, so if you help yourself by getting the booster, you’ll help others for free too.
This is all part of StarMed’s month-long ‘Boost Charlotte’ campaign.
StarMed officials said for every booster it gives, it will donate 50 meals to families in need in the Charlotte area.
“We agreed to donate enough to cover 50 meals for each booster injection,” said Chris Dobbins, StarMed’s Chief Information Officer.
It’s a welcome surprise for a couple who got their booster shots on Monday.
“Glad to hear that 100 families will be fed because we just did something that everyone should do,” Dennis Lacaria said.
StarMed estimates they will be giving 3,500 booster vaccines throughout December. That would provide 175,000 meals for families in Mecklenburg County.
“Anything that helps get more people vaccinated is good, and it does good at the same time,” said Courtney Lacaria, who received her shot on Monday.
Those meals will be served throughout December, and StarMed says they’ll settle the bill at the end of the month based on how many boosters are given.
Those wishing to participate can stop by any of the StarMed locations in Charlotte. That list of locations could be found here.
