Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee plans to sign sweeping COVID-19 legislation

Tennessee governor Bill Lee said on Wednesday he plans to sign a sweeping legislative package that will curtail the authority of public schools, local health authorities and businesses over COVID-19 restrictions.

The legislation, passed in the early morning hours of Oct. 30, came during a whirlwind special session, convened only for the third time in state history by lawmakers themselves to push back against the COVID-19 restrictions many Republicans felt like invasion of personal liberty.

“There are some issues that we need to resolve with the General Assembly, and I’ve talked to both speakers about that,” Lee told reporters on Wednesday. “That’s actually what we’re talking about today. But my plan is to sign that bill.’

Lee said he plans to sign the omnibus law before Friday’s deadline.
