Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signs rollback of COVID-19 restriction into law

With a stroke of a pen Friday afternoon, Governor Bill Lee signed into law a comprehensive package of legislation that strictly limits the powers schools, health authorities and businesses have over COVID-19 restrictions.

The law will now take effect immediately in Tennessee and will almost certainly face rapid legal challenges.

The legislation — passed late at night during a special session earlier this month — marked a major political victory for Republicans. But it raised concerns not only from Democrats, but also from hospitals and business interests, and is likely to lead to additional lawsuits, similar to the ongoing battle against Lee’s executive order over masks in schools.

The new law prohibits private companies from requiring COVID-19 vaccination certificates and only allows schools and other public entities to issue mask mandates in an extreme wave of 1,000 infections or more for every 100,000 residents in a 14-day period.
