While Northwestern’s positivity rate has been around 2%, this week saw an increase in both the positivity rate and the number of cases, while the number of tests taken has dropped.

Although Northwestern’s positive COVID-19 cases have declined since an increase at the beginning of the quarter, the number of cases this week increased by almost 25% compared to last week.

The campus positivity rate has remained at around 2% since the university suspended test requirements for all students two weeks ago. Now, only students who are not up to date on vaccination requirements need to test twice a week.

Last week, the number of tests taken was around 4,000 – a 50% drop from the number of tests taken the week before – while the positivity rate remained relatively the same. This week, while the number of tests is still around 4,000, the positivity rate has risen 0.53 percentage points to 2.78%.

Positive case numbers rose to 123 from last week’s 95, rising to 25% of last week’s number, while last week’s decline fell 50% from the week before.

Out of the 123 new positive observed cases, bachelor students accounted for 69%, with 85 this week – a share that has increased from week to week. Non-bachelor students make up 14 of the positive tests, while faculty and staff account for nine and 14 of the remaining cases, respectively.

NOW students, faculty, and staff can receive free, personalized asymptomatic testing at the Donald P. Jacobs Center from 9.00 to 16.00 on weekdays. Those with symptoms should use the test entrance on the northwest side of the Jacobs Center to receive personal testing between 6 p.m. 10.00 and 15.00 on weekdays.
