Alvaro Ramos has been named CEO of Costa Rica’s Social Security Fund. On May 9, Dr. Román Macaya, who served as CEO in the period 2018-2022, symbolically “the key” to the institution’s new head.
The newly appointed CEO is a graduate economist from the University of Costa Rica, holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and was selected by the President, Rodrigo Chaves, to serve as for the period 2022-2026. He has worked as a director of pensions and at the International Labor Organization in Switzerland. He has also held the post of Deputy Minister of Finance.
Ramos reaffirmed his commitment to work to strengthen Costa Rica’s social security. “I am here to work very hard. My commitment for the coming years is to strengthen the fund as much as possible,” he said.
He also mentioned that during his administration he will develop a strategy “so that the institution sees the 22nd century healthy and strong.” “In addition to a commitment to Costa Rican society, I have a commitment to my daughters; I want to give them a better country, and a better country consists of a fund that is stronger every day.”
Alvaro Ramos also explained that part of his job will be to make decisions to guarantee institutional long-term sustainability. The aging of the population will thus be one of the challenges that will characterize his work throughout the administration.
He stressed that “the aging of the population is a challenge that can be faced.” Nevertheless, the changing employment scenario, where people work for irregular short periods, along with aging, poses “a huge challenge to the financing of social security worldwide.”
Dr. Roberto Cervantes Barrantes, Director General of the institution, also attended the ceremony and welcomed the new head of the organization. “Dr. Ramos has been entrusted with leading the most important institution in Costa Rica. A distinguished institution, a symbol of solidarity, equality and an indisputable pillar in the pursuit of social peace in our country,” he said.
“I am confident that under his leadership we will move forward in strengthening our institution with our eyes always focused on our users and their needs,” he reassured.
Dr. Román Macaya Hayes, who served as CEO from 2018-2022, highlighted Ramos’ knowledge, experience and the institution’s mystique.
“You are taking on one of the most important positions in Costa Rica. But I want to tell you with all my heart that you must find the solutions to the great challenges facing the institution, working extraordinary people in the fund, with impressive preparation. and who work with great mystery because they know what their profession means, ”Macaya concluded.
