Washington [US]April 22 (ANI): The United States expects that the recent talks between US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe will lead to future talks, Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said.
“This was a first call. We felt it was a productive one and our expectation is that it will lead to future conversations that fit whatever the problem is,” Kirby said during a press briefing Thursday (local time).
The call between the two officials took place on Wednesday, and they discussed bilateral defense relations, regional security issues and the conflict in Ukraine.
Chinese Minister of State and Secretary of Defense Wei Fenghe has said the United States should not underestimate China’s determination and capacity.

In the telephone conversation, the two ministers also exchanged views on topics such as maritime and air safety and the situation in Ukraine. Wei said China and the United States should seriously implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
The two militaries should strengthen mutual trust, strengthen dialogue and exchanges, manage risks and crises and implement practical cooperation to ensure the normal and stable development of bilateral military-to-military relations, he said.
U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said Monday that the United States will continue to closely monitor the level of support China can show to Russia with respect to Ukraine.
“We will continue to keep a close eye, a close eye on the level of support China (People’s Republic of China) shows towards Russia,” Price said during a press briefing.
Price added that there will be strong consequences for China if it supplies weapons or supplies to Russia for its operation in Ukraine, or if it helps Moscow avoid Western sanctions. (ANI)
