These are the names people change the most, Social Security says

(NEXSTAR) — Ever considered changing your name? Depending on what your first name is, chances are you have one. Data from the Social Security Administration shows that some names are changed more often than others.

The government recently told the Washington Post which names are changed most often. WaPo says the administration used information from 2017 to the present – and the top 2 most changed names were the atypical “Issac” and “Chole”. These are believed to be misspellings of “Isaac” and “Chloe” respectively, although it is noted that there is no way to know for sure.

According to Behind the Name, which tracks the etymology, origin, and popularity of names based on scholarly linguistic sources and a user-submitted database, “Isaac” — taken from Hebrew and the Old Testament — has always been commonplace been. Since 2001, “Isaac” has been in the top 50 of most popular names according to BtN data.

It is also important to note that while “Issac” may be a misspelling of “Isaac” for some names, the spelling in some cultures is a variant of “Isaac”.

Meanwhile, “Chloe” seems to have fallen out of favor around 1943 — when it was ranked as the 952nd most popular name — before seeing a resurgence in popularity around 1982, reports Behind the Name. Chloe finally broke the top 10 in 2008 and has stayed in the top 30 ever since. In 2021, Chloe was actually the 24th most popular name.

The Social Security Administration’s popular names database includes names given in the U.S. and the District of Columbia as of 1879. The administration explains that there are certain restrictions on its records, including incorrect birth certificate information, different spellings of certain names, and possible ties to be broken .

According to SSA, the most popular baby names of 2021 are Liam, Noah and Oliver (ranked first through third) for men and Olivia, Emma and Charlotte for women.
