Third stimulus checks will ship until 2021, but beware of scammers

The IRS has warned that scammers are sending fake emails about the third round of stimulus checks to steal people’s financial and/or personal information.

While millions of Americans have received the third-round stimulus checks worth up to $1,400, which were part of the US bailout plan signed by President Joe Biden in March, the IRS will send payments through 2021.

CNBC reports that some eligible people still haven’t received their third stimulus payment, and scammers are sending emails to take advantage of it. In the emails, people are asked to click on a link to claim their third stimulus check. Cristina Miranda, an official in the agency’s Consumer and Business Education Department, says “the link is a trick.”

“If you click on it, a scammer can steal your money and your personal information to commit identity theft,” she added.

According to CNBC, it is considered an impersonation scam. It’s when scammers pretend to be from the IRS, Social Security Administration, or Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Nearly 12,500 Americans have filed fraud reports for scams during the pandemic.

“The IRS does not initiate contact via email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information — not even information related to the Economic Impact Payments,” the IRS said. “Also, beware of emails with attachments or links that claim to have special information about economic impact payments or refunds.”
