NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) — The governor has signed sweeping COVID-19 legislation passed during a special session last month.
On Friday evening, the governor’s office officially announced that Governor Bill Lee has signed the following bills:
With the approval of SB 9014, it “legally prohibits government agencies and public schools from requiring masks except in harsh conditions.”
“I have spoken with Lt. Gov. McNally and Speaker Sexton and am not signing this bill because it requires significant updates to reflect the non-pandemic functions of public health departments,” Lee said in a statement Friday. “We are committed to working together to address these changes during the regular session.”

“I want him to hear our voices, even if he doesn’t change his mind, he needs to know that we know this bill is wrong,” Green said against the COVID restrictions. “I think the majority of Tennessee residents understand that we’re still in a pandemic and we still need to do everything we can to protect people.”
The bill, being championed by conservatives, last month responded to President Biden’s demand that millions of workers be vaccinated. Something Lee has been saying from the start is too long a reach. But for Green, it’s this bill that’s dangerous.
A federal appeals court on Saturday temporarily suspended the Biden administration’s vaccination requirement for companies with 100 or more employees.
“I take my oath not to harm very seriously, and I fear this bill will harm people,” Green said.
The governor also signed Executive Order 92, which suspends a previous order that gave parents the choice to opt-out of their children’s mask requirements in public schools.
