Topeka state representative John Alcala has a mild case of COVID-19

Kansas legislator John Alcala has a mild, groundbreaking case of COVID-19.

Kansas Rep. John Alcala, D-Topeka, has a mild, breakthrough case of COVID-19.

His wife, Christina Valdivia-Alcala, made the announcement during Topeka’s city council meeting on Tuesday. Valdivia-Alcala is a councilor.

The couple were “extremely shocked” to learn that Alcala had become infected, she said. Alcala was vaccinated.

“We wear almost 100% masks every time we go out of the house, and yet we are here,” she said.

Because she was in quarantine, Valdivia-Alcala was the only councilor to participate via Zoom, while her eight fellow councilors and Mayor Michelle De La Isla met in person.
