UFC 279 Results, Highlights: Nate Diaz Scores Tony Ferguson’s Late Entry in Promotional Farewell

Nothing about UFC 279’s main event was as it should have been. Nothing but the fight between Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson might just be the perfect swan song for the ever-defiant Stockton, California native, as he rounded out his UFC contract with a fourth-round win.

The fight was odd, with Diaz and Ferguson both using unusual styles. The oddity peaked on the third round when Ferguson continued to deliver heavy leg kicks that had caused Diaz’s leg to swell and turn purple. Diaz started walking around the Octagon shaking his head, seemingly about to want to get out of the fight.

Instead, Diaz struck up again, throwing combinations and trying to swarm Ferguson. Sometimes Diaz would lean against the cage half way and talk to outside observers.

In the fourth round, Ferguson looked for a takedown, a move his corner had called for between the previous two rounds. That decision turned out to be Ferguson’s undo as Diaz quickly suffered a guillotine choke and squeezed until Ferguson was forced to tap at the 2:52 mark of the round.

“Full wrestling camp,” Diaz said after the fight, explaining that he was willing to defend takedown attempts with the choke. “I didn’t box. So we let that happen.”

Diaz, confirming that he would look for opportunities outside the Octagon now that his contract has now expired, then turned to Khamzat Chimaev, the man he should meet in the main event. Chimaev missed heavily on Friday, forcing the UFC to split three fights into three new matchups.

“I was like, this is such a bitch-ass rookie,” Diaz said. “I don’t even care about a bitch-ass rookie.”

CBS Sports was with you all the way on Saturday, bringing you all the results and highlights from the UFC 279 below.
