UK extends COVID-19 booster program to younger adults

LONDON (AP) – The UK government on Monday extended its COVID-19 booster programs to younger people, hoping to stave off another wave of infections during the colder winter months.

The Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee said people aged 40 to 49 are also eligible for a booster vaccination six months after their first injection. People 50 and older were more likely to qualify.

The decision comes after a senior British official told Sky News that the vaccination program was the best opportunity to avoid reintroducing restrictions over Christmas.

“It’s in our hands,” said Oliver Dowden, Conservative Party chairman. “If you get the booster when the call comes, that’s the biggest wall of defense we have against COVID.”
