US and China still at odds over the origin of the coronavirus

The United States and China are still in disagreement about the origin of the coronavirus, two years after the first patient started showing symptoms.

Chinese public health authorities have said the person contracted pneumonia on December 8, 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei province.

A team from the World Health Organization visited the city between January and February this year to investigate the origin of the virus.

The team says the virus may have spread to people from bats through intermediate hosts such as pangolins, but it was unable to identify its origin.

A US intelligence agency released a report in August stating that two hypotheses are plausible.

One is that the first human infection was most likely caused by contact with an infected animal, and the other that the virus accidentally leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Washington continues to ask China for information to help determine the origin of the virus.

But Beijing refuses to provide the information and says it is against politicization of the investigations.
