US should not have any illusions about Taiwan, says China

There is no room for compromise on Taiwan and the United States should be under no illusions about this, China’s defense ministry said on Thursday, adding that Washington had recently launched a series of “provocations” on various issues.

China says the issue of Taiwan, which it claims is Chinese territory, is most sensitive in its ties to the United States, which is also Taiwan’s main international lender and arms supplier.

During a virtual meeting earlier this month between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, sharp disagreements over Taiwan persisted. Xi said those in Taiwan seeking independence, and their supporters in the United States, were “playing with fire”.

Asked at a monthly news briefing in Beijing to comment on Sino-US military ties in light of those talks, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said a healthy and stable relationship was good for both and what the world expected.

China is willing to maintain exchanges and cooperation with the United States, he added.

“For a period, however, the US has said many irresponsible things and done many provocative things on Taiwan, the South China Sea, and close-up reconnaissance by warships and aircraft,” Wu said.

China has principles for developing relations between the two armies, that is, its sovereignty, dignity and core interests should not be violated, he added.

“Particularly on the Taiwan issue, China has no room for compromise, and the US should not be under any illusions about this.”

Democratic-ruled Taiwan has denounced China for its heightened diplomatic and military pressure to try to force the island to accept Chinese sovereignty.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has vowed to defend the island and says only the people can decide its future.
