The Bruins were without star defender Charlie McAvoy for Game 4 when he was placed in the COVID protocol ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Hurricanes, and he will be out for longer.
The team announced the announcement less than 30 minutes before game 4. According to coach Bruce Cassidy, the team found out shortly before the warm-up on Sunday.
UPDATE: Bruins defender Charlie McAvoy has been placed in the NHL COVID-19 protocol and will not be available for today’s match.
– Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins) May 8, 2022
The NHL and NHLPA agreed after the All-Star Break not to test asymptomatic players have been vaccinated against COVID-19, so McAvoy must have shown symptoms for a test to be required.
The Bruins are already without Hampus Lindholm, who was injured in match 2 after a hit from Andrei Svechnikov. As a result, Josh Brown and Mike Reilly have joined the ranks.
Despite not having their top two defenders, the Bruins were able to win a decisive victory in Game 4, where they beat the Hurricanes down by a score of 5-2 on Sunday and tied the series 2-2.
McAvoy has been Boston’s best defender all season. In the three playoff games against Carolina, McAvoy has two assists and 14 hits, while he has an average of 25:15 time on ice.
The Bruins lost the first two games of the series in Carolina before taking games 3 and 4.
Why does not Charlie McAvoy play?
McAvoy was ruled out Sunday after being placed on the COVID protocol ahead of Sunday’s Bruins-Hurricanes game.
The team announced the announcement less than 30 minutes before the start of Game 4, and the discovery came during the warm-up.
How long is Charlie McAvoy out?

That means McAvoy is not only out for Game 4, but he’s out for Game 5 and Game 6 if the series gets that far.
If the series reaches a game of 7, McAvoy may be available. That match is scheduled for Saturday, May 14th.
