Penny Blood presents a world twisted into gothic horror and nightmarish imagery rarely seen in Japanese RPGs. In Penny Bloodplayers follow the story of Matthew, an investigator who embarks on a dark international probe through the iconic Roaring Twenties, gathering allies and confronting trauma in a world twisted by cosmic horror, malice and chaos.
Players will travel the world, from the US to Europe and Asia, exploring countries that are recovering or basking in the aftermath of one of history’s bloodiest conflicts, oblivious to the turmoil brewing beneath the surface.
Penny BloodThe story begins with Matthew Farrell, a lone private investigator in New York who works for the Bureau of Investigation. Despite disliking the cursed powers he inherited from his father, he uses his fusion transformation abilities at the behest of the Bureau to track down monsters.
One day, Matthew is tasked with investigating a strange incident that occurred at a New York mental asylum. After rushing to the asylum, he finds it swarming with grotesque, raging creatures. Using his hidden power, Matthew manages to score a narrow victory.
To uncover the truth behind the bizarre incident, Matthew’s investigation will take him from America to the distant continent of Asia, including Japan and China, and to the far reaches of Europe. Along the way, he will meet those who fight for revenge, those who want to use the deviant terrors for their own gain, and those who simply want to destroy. Penny Blood tells the story of a man who must become what he wants to conquer.
Penny Blood‘s overworld maps give a bird’s eye view of cityscapes and cities that will teleport players to the 1920s, where they will experience the world as it was, oblivious to the horrific events that are soon to unfold.
From bustling streets to eerie sanatoriums, players will delve into carefully detailed field maps as they purchase items essential to their quest, investigate supernatural events, and battle Stygian monstrosities.
The easy-to-learn, hard-to-master Psycho Sigil combat system combines traditional turn-based Japanese RPG strategy with twitch-trigger reaction time to maximize attack potential, keeping players sharp in every encounter. Players can embrace the darkness within by using Fusion to invoke the abyss and fight fire with fire, using the power of darkness to cast back demons from whence they came.
Interactions with the demonic will affect the Sanity Points of the heroes. If players lose too many Sanity Points, their allies will succumb to madness, gain strength and lose their cool. However, that boost in power may be just what it takes to turn the tide in battle.
Back at the helm as a composer is Hirota Yoshitaka (from Shadows Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant fame) to inject a sense of dread and uncanny unease to match the atmosphere. And accompanying him is Akari Kaida or Breath of fire 3injecting a solid dose of jazz into the Roaring Twenties setting.
“This is my second chance. The chance to make another game like this is rare, so please support me,” said lead game designer Matsuzo Machida.
Led by Matsuzo Machida, character design by Miyako Kato and music and sound composed by Yoshitaka Hirota and Akari Kaida, Penny Blood promises to sink its claws into players while reviving the dark side of Japanese RPGs.

The disturbing landscape of North Tarrytown
It is located 30 miles north of New York, right on the east bank of the Hudson River. Some call this small village Sleepy Hollow because of a legend about a headless knight who roams the area.
To solve the mystery of the monster that appeared in Calvary Asylum, Matthew visits Tarrytown to talk to Oswald Craig, the local innkeeper. But what awaits Matthew in the eerily thick fog of Tarrytown…?
The Imperial Capital of Tokyo – Asakusa Rokku and Ryounkaku (1923)
After taking victory in both the Russo-Japanese War and World War I, Japan basked in glory as one of the Far East’s most formidable empires. This prosperity also prompted Tokyo to build the Ryounkaku Tower in Asakusa – the tallest structure in all of Asia, dubbed the “Asakusa Twelve-Story” by Tokyo residents.
After an attack in Asakusa involving the US Ambassador to Japan, Matthew rushes to Tokyo and glimpses a threat that wants to plunge the entire world into darkness.
An Irish-American born in 1895. Now 28, he lives in New York and works as a private investigator. After serving in the great war, he returned to the US and traveled to several states to investigate a series of eerie incidents. One day, William J. Burns, the director of the Bureau of Investigation, entrusts him with a top-secret mission that takes him to Japan.
Normally, Matthew uses a sawed-off shotgun and martial arts to subdue his enemies, but when in danger, he can turn into a fusion monster, allowing him to tear his enemies apart in various ways. Those who know this secret call him the knight, but he doesn’t care.
As Matthew searches for Emilia, he is gradually drawn deeper and deeper into a war against creatures from another plane.
Demna, the Crownless Knight
A fusion monster without elements and a symbol of the loneliness and emptiness that lurk deep in Matthew’s heart.
Well balanced in terms of attack and defense, Demna can be useful in all sorts of situations. Both the sword and shield are engraved in ancient Goidelic. The text of the sword reads: “The power to grant the sinners endless sleep”, while the shield reads: “The power to accept any kind of hardship.”
Demna is the first fusion monster Matthew turned into after inheriting this father’s wealth, and still hides more potential…
Born in London in 1898. Emilia is now 25 and currently a member of the British Secret Service. After being praised for her fierce passion and incredible skills, she was promoted to special agent specializing in foreign affairs.
On her last mission, she became a bodyguard for Mr. Tubbs, the US ambassador to Japan. Shortly after, Mr. Tubbs died in an incident in Tokyo’s Asakusa neighborhood while Emilia went missing.
One of her eyes and three of her limbs have been replaced by robotic tools, allowing her superhuman abilities to mow down all kinds of monsters.
Born in Tokyo in 1906. Now 17, Suseri serves as an adviser-priestess to Kamuzumi, the monster destructive force of the Japanese Empire.
Because her mother came from a family of spiritualists who were gifted in magical arts for children, Suseri has the ability to sense aliens as soon as they appear. She is said to be the eyes of the Shinteigumi, Kamuzumi’s frontline brigade, but she never hesitates to send the monsters herself when needed, taking advantage of the vast reserves of spiritual power that swirl within her.
After Matthew and Emilia rescue her in the Imperial capital, she joins their cause to repay them. Suseri’s favorite weapons are her simakyo magic mirrors.
The name given to the horrific grotesquerie discovered at the Golgotha Asylum.
The Motofuji discharge large amounts of malice, a type of energy that comes from negative human emotions. This malice is said to be the culprit behind the monstrous transformations of the asylum patients. The negative miasma seeping from every pore of the hideous Motofujis penetrated the minds and bodies of the patients, arousing vile desires in them.
After Matthew stormed into the asylum, he went into a furious battle with the creature and managed to destroy it… But it’s still a mystery why the monster appeared there in the first place.
The malice released from the Motofuji has caused some of the patients of the Golgotha Asylum to undergo monstrous transformations.
Long deprived of all intelligence and emotion, these zombies now have one goal in mind: to devour as much living flesh and vital energy as they can get into their rotting hands. Rejected by the instinct to drown their bodies in malice, these patients shocked the NYPD with a brutal, bloody attack.
A manifestation of darkness that has settled in Matthew’s psyche. Unbeknownst to Matthew, Atam is the Lord of Death who commands the Seven Deadly Sins: demons representing the sins of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride.
Originally an inhabitant of the “other side,” or the root of the Tree of Life, as some call it, Atam has found sustenance on “our side” by hiding in the souls of humans possessing divine blood. And so, after many long years of nurturing these souls, Atam acquired a wealth of knowledge that steadily turned it into something more akin to an almighty god.
Several years ago, Atam failed in his attempt to curse and kill his previous host and was instead beaten within inches of his own life. Now Atam slumbers in a new host, focused on nothing but regaining its power until one day it can be born again.
