Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that relations between China and the US are at a historically critical juncture, and called on both sides to put bilateral relations back on track of healthy and steady development.
The National Committee on US-China Relations hosted its 2021 gala dinner on Tuesday. President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden sent congratulations to the event. Chinese Ambassador to the US Qin Gang and Chairman of the National Committee Jacob Lew read the respective letters.
In his letter, Xi expressed his appreciation and recognition to the Committee and its members for their long-standing commitment to growing China-US relations and to exchanges and cooperation between the countries in various fields.
He pointed out that the relationship between China and the US is one of the most important bilateral relations in the world today.
“Whether our two countries, the world’s largest developing country and the largest developed country and two permanent members of the UN Security Council, can handle our relations well, is underpinned by the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, and is important for the future of the world,” Xi wrote.
The Chinese president noted that both countries will benefit from cooperation and lose from confrontation, stressing that cooperation is the only right choice.
President Xi also stressed that following the principles of mutual respect, coexisting peacefully and win-win cooperation, China stands ready to work with the United States to improve exchanges and cooperation across the board, jointly solve regional and international problems as well as global challenges and, in the meantime, manage differences well.
“I hope that the Committee and all those who care for and support the development of relations between China and the US will strengthen confidence, continue your good work and contribute even more wisdom and strength to the promotion of friendship between China and the US, for the benefit of people in our two countries and around the world,” he added.
Emphasizing that the world is at a turning point in history, Biden said in his letter to the Gala that the relationship between the United States and China is of global significance, from tackling the COVID-19 pandemic to tackling the existential threat of the climate crisis.
To solve these challenges and seize opportunities, the wider international community must come together as everyone does their part to build a secure, peaceful and resilient future, he added.
Biden also praised the role of the National Committee on US-China Relations in fostering cooperation between the United States and China and helping to foster mutual understanding and constructive talks to find common ground.
“I am grateful for your dedication to strengthening the ties between the people of our two countries. Through the advocacy of organizations like yours, we can strive to become more connected and promote interests that affect our countries and the world.” said the US president.
