Yoon’s China policy ‘based on S. Korea-US alliance’: Chinese scholar

SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) – The Yoon Suk-yeol administration’s policy toward China appears to be “based on the South Korea-US alliance,” a Chinese scholar said Friday, alluding to geopolitical barriers to improve relations between Seoul and Beijing.

Zheng Jiyong, a professor at Fudan University, spoke virtually at a peace forum hosted by Yonhap News Agency and the Association Ministry as Seoul and Washington seek to intensify security cooperation amid North Korea’s military threats, China’s security and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“The Yoon government’s China policy appears to be one based on the South Korea – US alliance,” Zheng said, suggesting that relations between the South and China are influenced by Seoul’s political priorities of the alliance.

The professor listed a set of Seoul’s latest political initiatives, which he said worsened ties with Beijing. They included its push to expand cooperation with the US-led security forum, the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, and its recent participation in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, which was seen as a driving force to counter China’s regional influence.

Zheng also pointed out that the Yoon government apparently uses a two-pronged political line of “tactical cooperation” and “strategic containment.”

“South Korea can strengthen its alliance with the United States step by step and gradually and increase its strategic containment vis-à-vis China,” he said, warning that a “siege strategy” against China would affect its resistance.
